Now, this brand is pushing the envelope.
Hermès is already making major fashion waves in 2024, but not for the right reasons after being mocked over a paper envelope that the French luxury brand is selling for a whopping $126.
Hermès, most famous for its ultra-exclusive Birkin bags beloved by celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham, is going viral as people poke fun at the ultra-expensive item on social media.
The pricey envelope is retailing for £100, which is about $126, compared to a regular white envelope, which can cost under $1.
The detailed description reads: ‘Where is the best place to leave an important message? Inside this signature orange Hermès paper envelope.’
The stationary piece is wrapped in silk and reusable. Plus, it’s available in two different sizes.
According to Hermès, ‘this keepsake can be sent as a special invitation or even a declaration of love,’ serving as ‘a long-lasting way to turn your records into beautiful memories.’
The vibrant envelopes with elaborate designs similar to those on the brand’s scarves are also supposed to be ‘ideal for storing travel documents, tickets, or notes.’
In November, New York City-based influencer and comedian Benton McClintock, 26, went viral for calling out the home collection on TikTok.
Benton joked, ‘They have so many super, super incredible products,’ spotlighting a mushroom paper weight that costs $1,300 as well as roasting the envelope in question.
‘Please don’t bother sending me ANYTHING in the mail unless it’s in the Hermes $135 envelope! Where else is the best place to leave an important message?’ the influencer continued, before saying it’s ‘reusable,’ so you’re ‘wasting money if you’re not purchasing this.’
‘The diversity, the range!’ Benton quipped about the different sizes.
Commenters joined Benton in poking fun at the home decor offerings, with one person writing, ‘lmaoooo rich people are BORED.’
‘So if the envelope is reusable… do I just ask the person I sent it to to give it back?’ one person joked.
‘TWO SIZES for the envelope?!? They’re really spoiling us this holiday season,’ another jested.
One popular comment read, ‘We’re literally just a joke to rich people.’
On X – previously Twitter – the response was just as sassy, with one person tweeting, ‘Rich people are stupid enough to fall for these scams.’
This isn’t the only expensive paper good from the high-end brand.
There are plenty of other home goods that are far less expensive than the Birkin bags, but still have a hefty price tag.
Fans of the brand can invest in a $5,000 tiny trash can, a paper weight for almost $3,000 and small storage basket for about $7,700.
And unlike the Birkin, there’s no top secret wait-list before you can buy one.
