In a vibrant celebration of culture and community, the Hoopa Valley Tribe, in collaboration with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), marked a significant milestone last week. The occasion was the unveiling of the nearly completed Tish Tang Mural at the Tish Tang Campground, a project that intertwines the past with the present in a vivid tapestry of art.
The Tish Tang Mural, a key component of the Hoopa Four project funded by Clean California, represents Hoopa culture. Crafted by the talented muralist Carl Avery, the mural is a visual narrative that encapsulates the essence of the Hoopa Valley. Featuring bold colors, traditional designs, and native wildlife, it reflects the beauty of the river and the spirit of the Hoopa people.
Commissioned under the $5 million Clean California Hoopa Four project, Avery brings to life his experiences and observations from growing up in Hoopa. From ceremonial dances to women cooking acorns, each element of the mural tells a tale deeply rooted in Hoopa heritage. Avery aims to instill pride and a sense of identity within the Hoopa community.
The project began with the removal of the previous mural, a cherished piece since 1989. Deborah McConnell, the lead artist of the original mural, expressed her excitement and approval of Avery’s work.
This mural at Tish Tang is merely the beginning of a larger vision for Hoopa Valley. The Hoopa Four project includes enhancements to three other key locations: Neighborhood Facilities, Pookeys Park, and the Rodeo Grounds. These improvements signify a broader commitment to beautifying and uplifting the Hoopa community.
With construction plans nearing completion, the Hoopa Four Project is set to move forward, with bidding for local contractors starting in early 2024. The selected contractor will begin work in Spring, aiming for completion by June 2024.
