Virginia Tech might have won 17 of the last 18 games in the battle for the Commonwealth Cup dating back to 2004, but that doesn’t lessen the pressure that comes with trying to beat rival UVa on the football field.
“I know how much it means to everybody,” Hokies coach Brent Pry said. “You guys know I’ve been pretty much 1-0, 1-0. Well, this is a big 1-0 and I’m not afraid to say it.”
The rivalry’s back on Saturday at Scott Stadium after a year hiatus due to the shooting tragedy that led to the cancellation of last year’s game. Pry, who coached in the series as a GA with the Hokies from 1995-97, thinks it’s one of the better rivalries in the college game.
“There’s so many common threads, families that have somebody go to UVa and somebody else come to Tech,” Pry said. “A lot of guys that played together or played against one another. One of them ends up at Tech and one of them ends up at UVa. There’s just a lot of familiarity with the two programs.”
