LEGO contest builds excitement for Wm. McKinley Museum exhibit

In partnership with The Repository, every Monday, Stark Community Foundation highlights positive happenings in our community. Here’s to Good News Mondays!

Students of all ages are being called to put their building skills to the test for the Wm. McKinley Presidential Library & Museum’s LEGO Building Contest, an initiative in conjunction with the upcoming summer exhibition “Brick Flicks” that will be on display July 1 to Sept. 30.

Featuring the work of famous LEGO artist Warren Elsmore, “Brick Flicks” is a traveling exhibition of some of the most iconic and memorable film moments of all time that have been recreated in LEGO bricks.

From “Wayne’s World” to “West Side Story,” “The Matrix” to “Mary Poppins” and “Laurel & Hardy” to the “Life of Pi,” each familiar scene has been carefully photographed to mimic the staging and lighting of the original movie, but with the scenery, actors and actresses built out of everyone’s favorite building blocks.

Through a grant from Visit Canton, the museum has commissioned a custom-built McKinley monument replica from Elsmore that will be made entirely from LEGOs and remain on display for years to come.

Along with interactive LEGO building stations integrated as part of the exhibition, the museum has opened a contest for students in our community to participate in the exhibit using their own creativity.

Kindergarten through second-grade students are encouraged to create their favorite animal out of LEGO DUPLO blocks, and third-grade students through high school seniors are encouraged to submit creations representing American History using classic LEGO blocks.

Photos of the creations must be submitted through the museum’s website, and the winning designs from each of the four age categories (grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12) be publicly displayed in the Keller Gallery alongside the “Brick Flicks” exhibition. Creations must be less than 30 inches x 30 inches and smaller than 24 inches tall in order to fit in the museum’s display cases. The submission deadline for the contest is May 1.
