Vampires have been a part of the Marvel Universe as soon as the Comics Code Authority relaxed its rules banning vampires from comics in the early 1970s (Marvel introduced Morbius almost the instant that the rules were relaxed), but outside a handful of storylines, vampires and the greater Marvel Universe have rarely interacted in a big way. That is changing next year in a major crossover event, “Blood Hunt.”
The main miniseries for the crossover event will be written by Jed MacKay and drawn by star artists Pepe Larraz and Marte Gracia. Like pretty much every major crossover event nowadays, the event will have tie-ins in other comic book titles, as well as some spotlight miniseries tying into the event.
Marvel released a promotional image by Leinil Francis Yu and Sunny Gho promoting the crossover, offering up the tagline, “Who will bite it?,” suggesting that the crossover will involve some major deaths.
MacKay was quoted in Marvel’s press release for the event as noting, “We have vampires in our books all the time, there’s some bad blood there. What happens if the shoe was on the other foot? We’ve got the Avengers, Moon Knight’s Midnight Mission, Doctor Strange, Miles Morales, and of course, Blade, and there’s going to be more vampires you can shake a stick at.”
During his run on Moon Knight, MacKay has worked vampire-hunting into the series, and Blade has even guest-starred in the run, as well. MacKay has been handling Doctor Strange (or the world of Doctor Strange during the period where Stephen Strange was dead) for a few years now, and it is worth noting that one of the few major Marvel events in the past involving vampires DID involve Doctor Strange. That early 1980s storyline by Roger Stern involved both Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch of the Avengers. It occurred when Stern was writing both Avengers and Doctor Strange.
Well, guess what? MacKay is currently writing both Doctor Strange and The Avengers, as well as Moon Knight, so this looks to be one of those special types of crossover events where the main writer is distinctly connected to the feature characters. Marvel has provided an official teaser trailer for the event, as well.
Blood Hunt is set to debut in the Spring of 2024.
