From October 3-7 and again on October 10-14, Birdie’s will re-introduce its Italian American pop-up, Aiello’s, with a custom menu on consecutive weeks, per the restaurant. The concept will feature a $65 prix fixe menu, heavy on the red sauce, plus Italian red wines available by the glass.
“Aiello’s is a red sauce joint inspired by my grandfather, Phil Aiello, and his Italian American community in Brooklyn,” said Birdie’s co-owner Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel, in an email. “He was 12 years old when his family immigrated to the U.S. from Calabria, and he lived a full life—from serving in the Army to playing college baseball and starting a construction business in Houston—all while raising five children.”

The concept is a tribute to Aiello, who died in 2019 at the age of 96. This is the fourth iteration of the pop-up, with previous editions coming in February and early fall of 2022, and once in February 2023.
“Birdie’s is the restaurant that everyone wants in their neighborhood,” the writeup reads. “There’s a long list of reasons why a line wraps down the restaurant’s stretch of East 12th Street in Austin before the doors open at 5 p.m.”
