Stephanie Brown’s classic Spoiler look is combined with her Batgirl costume in a new piece of fan art.
Drawn by artist Kaitlyn Leeds, who posts under social media using the name VioletSyren, the mashup design gives the third Batgirl the outfit she donned during her fan-favorite Batgirl run from 2007 – 2008, but replaces the mask with a full face covering reminiscent of Stephanie’s Spoiler guise. Notably, the design also includes little bat ears on the hood.
Stephanie Brown has gone through multiple costume changes over the years since her debut in 1992’s Detective Comics #647. Nearly all of them have incorporated a black and purple color scheme or a mask that either fully covers Stephanie’s head or the lower half of her face. Stephanie’s most recent outfit in the soon-to-end Batgirls series is similar to her look in Leeds’ illustration but lacks a bat mask and features a purple bat symbol and belt instead of gold.
Stephanie Brown’s Looks And History
A noticeable standout in Stephanie’s wardrobe is her red, yellow and green Robin guise from a shortlived stint as Batman’s main partner during Robin #126-128 in 2004. Stephanie’s look at the time mimicked Tim Drake’s costume throughout the ’90s and early 2000s but added a hairband and red skirt. Unfortunately, before she could get a chance to shine in her new duds, Stephanie was hastily fired by Batman, who bristled at her lack of experience. In order to prove her worth as a capable sidekick, Stephanie accidentally kickstarted a massive gang conflict in the controversial 2004 event War Games, which ended with Black Mask seemingly killing her.
Stephanie was healed by Leslie Thompkins in Africa and returned to join the Bat Family in 2008. After Bruce Wayne was presumed dead following DC’s Final Crisis mega-event of that same year, Cassandra Cain — the other Batgirl at the time and one of Stephanie’s closest friends — bequeathed her the role of Gotham’s one and only Batgirl.
Within the current continuity of the Batgirls series, Cassandra and Stephanie both serve as a crimefighting duo under the command of Gotham City’s original bat-masked teenage femme vigilante, Barbara Gordon.
