City View Restaurant reopened Wednesday, April 19 at 33 Walter U. Lum Place in Chinatown, right across the street from Portsmouth Square. Inside the new, 5,000-square-foot location, City View will continue to offer its long-running menu of dim sum classics like shrimp dumplings, turnip cake and pork siu mai.
Tablehopper first reported the opening.
The new space, as shown in an Instagram post, boasts a contrasting look compared to its old dining room’s white walls and wide windows. Gray walls and tile surround the dining room, with walnut-tone tables and lime green booths and banquettes. Black metal lamps hanging over tables and small plants on shelves add to a more modern feel.
City View first opened at 662 Commercial Street, but closed the doors at its longtime home on March 27, per a message on its website. In January, SFGATE reported the restaurant’s landlord, the Chinatown Community Development Center, sued the restaurant, seeking eviction. At the time, City View already had plans to move to its new home, per city planning documents.
City View had considered a move at least once before. In 2019, The Chronicle reported the restaurant had plans, which never materialized, to move into the basement of the building located at 838 Grant Ave. in Chinatown, the top floor of which once housed the landmark Empress of China, and is now Empress by Boon.
The Chronicle reached out to City View to comment on the opening but did not hear back in time for publication.
