We know San Antonio loves a deal, especially when it comes to good eats! $10 Taste is a series from MySA where we look for the most affordable and tasty meals across San Antonio that are 10 dollars or less.
McCreless Mall might be a memory of San Antonio’s past, but the McCreless Corner Shopping Center that stands in its place has developed into a destination for small businesses, chains, and restaurants on the Southeast Side of town. A highlight of the center is definitely the massive H-E-B Plus, but just next door is a quick service, casual quesadilla spot that is worth a trek all on its own.
For this edition of $10 Taste, I paid a visit to Las Quesadillas Poblanas at 4100 S. New Braunfels Ave., where every quesadilla is less than $5. In fact, when I went, each one cost exactly $4.13. I had to find out for myself if one was enough to constitute a satisfying lunch or if the quesadillas were more snack-worthy.
Getting to Las Quesadillas Poblanas
First of all, the restaurant is literally attached to H-E-B, so parking is no issue. Secondly, it has online ordering, which makes the experience faster, if that matters to you. While getting there is easy, ordering in-person may take a little longer than usual if you don’t happen to speak Spanish, at least conversationally, but the workers are more than willing to meet you half way.
Walking up to Las Quesadillas Poblanas, you’ll notice the colorful window decals printed with anthropomorphic tacos and ingredients spelled out in decorative ways. The vibrant display is both inviting and informative, with one window panel listing out the entire menu of options. You also have no idea what to expect of its dining room because there’s no way to see inside.
Quesadillas are assembled on the spot
Once inside, you’ll see a small counter where a cashier and a cook stand, ready to make quesadillas on the spot. All the fixings are kept in heated containers behind the counter, next to a flat-top grill where all the cheesy magic happens. A mounted television plays one of the Spanish channels in the small dining room, which is accented by yellow and orange chairs.
I ordered two quesadillas: one pastor and one huitlacoche, otherwise known as black mushrooms or corn smut. Together, they cost $8.26 before taxes, just under the $10 mark, a sensible price considering how stuffed and filling the quesadillas are. The cashier passed along my order to a cook, and she went to work putting together my meal, grilling the cheesy offerings as I found a small table to set up shop.
A few minutes later, my order was ready, and I felt imaginary hearts beam from my eyes. Red chunks of pastor were poking out of the handmade tortilla, as melted cheese held it all together perfectly. The huitlacoche quesdailla was still steaming from heat of the grill, with tiny bits of yellow corn shining from within. I quickly chowed down on the pastor, which was bursting with spice and terrific textures. I got about halfway through the second quesadilla before I realized that I was not going to finish both in one sitting. I would’ve definitely been fine with ordering just one for a quick lunch, for future reference.
Final thoughts
I was in and out of Las Quesadillas Poblanas in way under an hour, including the time it took for me to eat. This is a perfect spot if you happen to work in the area and need an affordable, fast meal during your lunchbreak, or if you want to feed the family after a particularly tiring grocery trip at the H-E-B next door. As always, I highly recommend adding a little salsa to your quesadilla for a little extra flavor. Luckily, the restaurant provides two different kinds at each of its dining tables, and they’ll even send you home with some if you order to-go.
By the way, you don’t have to live near McCreless to enjoy Las Quesadillas Poblanas, as the restaurant has two other locations on the Westside.
