Twentieth Gallery Hollywood Hills : Henzel Studio : Erode – Morph Bloom

Swedish rug publisher and experimental designer Henzel Studio celebrates years of collaborations with women contemporary artists and photographers with the exhibition Erode – Morph – Bloom, currently on view at Twentieth Gallery’s new Hollywood Hills location.

Erode – Morph – Bloom features artworks and limited-edition design collaborations by seminal contemporary artists Vanessa Beecroft, Nan Goldin, Kim Gordon, Katerina Jebb, Mary McCartney, and Marilyn Minter.

The exhibition, curated by Joakim Andreasson, bends genres to exhibit and inspire cross-disciplinary approaches to art making and living. The artists’ rugs collectively evoke a cyclical course that is directly tied with their artisanal makings—here, the erosion of raw materials, the morphing from one media to another, and its blossoming into the end result—play a role in terms of production, subject matter, and design attributes.

Erode – Morph – Bloom brings together original works of art alongside limited edition artist rugs designed in collaboration with Henzel Studio. Henzel Studio worked closely with each artist to expand the idea of editioned artworks as well as the boundaries of traditional textile mediums and the expectations of living design. The artists’ rugs are not simply rendered but also enter a dialogue with the artwork’s and artist’s concepts, breaking from the grid to free-form shapes and ambitiously scaled translations that playfully envelop a room, whether hung on the wall or placed on the floor. The exhibition demonstrates the many possibilities of textiles’ visual and audible influence on interiors. The rugs are published with an uncanny resemblance to art prints; hand-knotted silk and wool provide a depth and color quality that carry a trompe-l’œil and photorealistic effect.

“Erode – Morph – Bloom, are three words in isolation that came to mind when observing the exhibited rugs and provoked a thematic demand or mantra. They all call for a certain natural movement and process, which can be tied to both the artist’s visions as well as the arduous artisanal making of textiles. The idea of movement and process is also apparent in the working procedure with each artist—radical women not only shifting the art world but also creating a space to translate that energy into our interiors. It’s a mantra that inspires the rewards of process and evolution.” — Joakim Andreasson

Erode – Morph – Bloom is now on view through April 14, 2023 at Twentieth gallery’s new Hollywood Hills location. The exhibition is on view by appointment only via
