The large department store in the San Francisco Centre mall closed Sunday. Its closure follows that of Nordstrom Rack, which shuttered its location a block away at 901 Market St. last month.
Now, the wing of the mall that once featured Nordstrom is eerily empty, with a security guard posted at the tall, gold-plated gates meant to keep out any wanderers. Signs printed on plain white paper that read “Nordstrom is permanently closed” are posted at any entrances to the store, and the curved escalators leading to where Nordstrom occupied the mall’s fourth through eighth levels are blocked off with caution tape. Near the elevators that once led to the store, Ebar, a Nordstrom-run coffee stand, sits vacant.
The closure only adds to a rapidly changing environment at the mall, which was turned over to its lender by operator Brookfield Properties in June. Last month, the Westfield logos that had adorned the building’s exterior for years were removed, making way for whatever is next in store for the building.
